PAIGE PICKED UP A LOAF of bakery-made pound cake on her way to Helen and Ben’s, excited about the evening, but, at the same time, nervous. Mostly because of her renewed interest in the paperback. She’d read it the last two evenings and at lunch today. She’d made it clear to Sterling, she would not be home tonight.

She pulled up in their driveway but didn’t get out right away, her thoughts continuing to churn.

The story itself, though it had changed early on to include his search for her, was quite good, full of heart ... how much he loved his grandfather, how dedicated he was toward building his future. She loved the characters, the foreman Obadiah and the cast of others from the ranch or around town.

She predicted the ending as it should be for books of that type, a happy one for Sterling and the ranch. She couldn’t see how the romance would work out.

After all, though the magic of Christmas had set this into motion, there was no way she would ever meet him in real life. But she’d learned a lot about trusting in herself, about giving to others, and holding her head high. Things that were invaluable. She had no regrets for the experience because of that.

There, too, was its effect on Helen, who had no idea they’d shared the experience. No point in telling her now. She’d finish the book next week, in time for Christmas, and everything would stop then.

The porch light flicked on, spreading a yellow glow over the front stoop, and the front door opened, Helen stepping out. Paige exited her car, the bagged cake in one hand. “Good evening. I feel like we just saw one another.”

Helen waved her forward. “We did. We did. I’m so happy you’re here.”

Paige approached, and they exchanged a hug. Helen reversed, allowing her room to enter. Paige paused on the braided rug just inside and looked through the archway at a glimpse of a comfy living room. An artificial Christmas tree adorned with gold lights filled a corner between a pair of sliding-glass doors and the kitchen peninsula. A silver and gold cloth angel sat on top, a selection of decorative bulbs dangling on the branches.

“Isn’t that lovely?” Paige asked.

“Oh, thank you. It is pretty. We certainly worked hard at it.”

They strolled through, and Helen’s husband, Ben, thrust to his feet. His armchair rocked back and forth with his rising.

“My husband, Ben ... and this is Paige.”

A wide smile spread on his face, and he pushed a pair of black-rimmed glasses up with two fingers. A lock of rumpled hair swept across his forehead. “Good to meet you, Paige. Helen has said such nice things about you.”

“Oh, I hope so,” Paige replied.

The three of them laughed, the sound forming a cozy atmosphere. Helen pointed toward the kitchen with one hand. “I have just a little to do before we eat. Would you mind dressing the salad?” She laughed beneath her breath. “Listen to me, being bossy.
